This is a photograph of Dennis Toff’s paybook, and his own album of his time serving in the Royal Navy as a photographer.

Dennis died on 5th August 2018, aged 91.

Dennis trained at the School of Photography of the Regent Street Polytechnic in 1942 and then spent several months in the Photographic Branch of the American Red Cross in London. He joined the Navy in 1944 and after training at the Photographic School at Felpham served as an acting PO Phot (A) at HMS Gosling near Warrington until discharged in 1947.

After his release he made some documentary films and worked as a freelance photographerfor the Picture Post on a project in the newly established State of Israel. He left photography from 1950 to 1993 and pursued a successful business career before returning to photography when he retired.

Since then Dennis photographed many famous people including portraits of nearly all the painters in the Royal Academy of arts and has had exhibitions around the world. He also published several books of his photographic work.

He was enrolled as a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 2007.
